Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 0.75 cup Buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup Marsala wine
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup Boiling water
  • 0.25 cup Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan, or line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Whisk thoroughly to combine and remove any lumps.

Step 3

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, Marsala wine, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the bowl of dry ingredients. Stir well with a spatula or whisk until a smooth, lump-free batter forms.

Step 5

Carefully pour in the boiling water, a little at a time, and mix until fully incorporated. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 8

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

Optional: Once the cake has cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar for a simple yet elegant finishing touch.

Step 10

Slice and serve. Enjoy as is, or pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate ganache for extra decadence!
