Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 Eggs
  • 0.5 cup Buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup Nutella
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Heavy cream

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly among the 12 cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 16-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7

Once the cupcakes are cool, use a small knife or a cupcake corer to cut a small hole in the center of each cupcake. Fill each hole with about 1 teaspoon of Nutella and smooth the top.

Step 8

To prepare the frosting, beat the cream cheese and unsalted butter together in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 9

Mix in the heavy cream and beat until the frosting is fluffy. Transfer about 3 tablespoons of Nutella to a small piping bag or zip-top bag with a corner snipped off.

Step 10

Fill another piping bag fitted with a star tip with the cream cheese frosting. Place the bag of Nutella and the bag of cream cheese frosting together in a larger piping bag to create a swirled effect.

Step 11

Pipe the mixed frosting onto the cooled cupcakes in a decorative swirl.

Step 12

Store the cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving and enjoy!
