Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 30 caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup pecans, chopped (optional)
  • 0.25 teaspoon flaky sea salt (for topping, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Step 3

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and kosher salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Step 5

Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the chocolate chips, reserving the remaining 1/2 cup for later.

Step 6

Press half of the cookie dough mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then remove from the oven (the dough should still be slightly underbaked at this point).

Step 8

While the base is baking, make the caramel layer. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the unwrapped caramel candies and heavy cream. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the caramel is completely melted and smooth.

Step 9

Pour the melted caramel evenly over the partially baked cookie base. If using pecans, sprinkle them over the caramel layer.

Step 10

Crumble the remaining cookie dough over the caramel layer, covering as much as possible but leaving some caramel visible.

Step 11

Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips over the top.

Step 12

Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 18-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Step 13

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan.

Step 14

Once cooled, sprinkle with flaky sea salt, if desired. Lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper and cut into squares.

Step 15

Serve and enjoy your Chocolate Caramel Commotion Bars!
