Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Whole milk
  • 0.25 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup Boiling water
  • 0.25 cup Chocolate chips

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease and flour 4 small mason jars (about 8 oz each) or use non-stick baking spray.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is smooth and lump-free.

Step 5

Slowly mix in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 6

Divide the batter equally among the prepared mason jars, filling them approximately halfway to allow room for the cake to rise.

Step 7

Sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top of each jar of batter for added richness.

Step 8

Place the jars on a baking tray to make transferring them in and out of the oven easier.

Step 9

Bake the jars in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 10

Carefully remove the jars from the oven and allow them to cool completely before handling. (The jars will be extremely hot when they come out of the oven!)

Step 11

Once cooled, top with whipped cream, chocolate frosting, or any desired toppings. Serve directly out of the jars and enjoy!
