Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives (finely chopped)
  • 0.75 cup whole milk
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon water (optional, for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with small pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

Step 4

Gently fold the shredded cheddar cheese and chopped chives into the flour-butter mixture until evenly distributed.

Step 5

Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently 2-3 times to bring it together. Pat or roll the dough out to about 1-inch thickness.

Step 7

Using a 2.5-inch biscuit cutter (or a similar-sized glass), cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Gather and re-roll the scraps to cut out additional biscuits as needed.

Step 8

If desired, prepare an egg wash by beating the egg with 1 teaspoon of water. Brush the tops of the biscuits with the egg wash for a golden sheen.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and allow the biscuits to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm and enjoy!
