Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Pork spareribs
  • 0.5 cups Hoisin sauce
  • 0.25 cups Soy sauce
  • 0.25 cups Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar
  • 3 pieces Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons Ketchup
  • 0.25 cups Water
  • 2 stalks Scallions, chopped (optional garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame seeds (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Start by preparing the spareribs. Use a sharp knife to remove the silver skin membrane on the underside of the ribs for better texture and flavor absorption.

Step 2

In a large bowl, prepare the marinade by whisking together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, Chinese five-spice powder, sesame oil, ketchup, and water.

Step 3

Place the spareribs in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the ribs, ensuring that they are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, for maximum flavor.

Step 4

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack over it. Lightly oil the rack to prevent sticking.

Step 5

Remove the ribs from the marinade, allowing any excess marinade to drip off, and reserve the marinade for later. Place the ribs on the prepared wire rack, meat side up.

Step 6

Cover the ribs with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.

Step 7

While the ribs are baking, pour the reserved marinade into a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until slightly thickened. This will be used as the basting sauce.

Step 8

After 1 hour of baking, remove the foil from the ribs and brush them generously with the thickened marinade. Increase the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C). Continue baking, uncovered, for another 20-30 minutes, basting the ribs every 10 minutes with the sauce.

Step 9

Once the ribs are caramelized and slightly charred at the edges, remove them from the oven. Let them rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing into individual ribs.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds, if desired, before serving. Enjoy your Chinese-style BBQ spareribs warm!
