Ingredients

  • 1 cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon optional crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat and add the sesame oil.

Step 2

Add the popcorn kernels and cover the pot with a lid, leaving it slightly ajar to allow steam to escape.

Step 3

Shake the pot occasionally as the kernels pop to prevent burning. Remove from heat when popping slows down significantly and set aside in a large mixing bowl.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, garlic powder, ground ginger, sugar, and salt. Add red pepper flakes if desired for added heat.

Step 5

Drizzle the spice mixture over the freshly popped popcorn and toss thoroughly to coat evenly.

Step 6

Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top and toss again for additional crunch and flavor.

Step 7

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Enjoy your Chinese-Style Popcorn!
