Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 0.5 cup cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 orange zest of an orange
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 0.25 tsp red chili flakes
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for sauce thickening)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 stalks green onions, sliced

Directions

Step 1

Cut the boneless, skinless chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, combine 0.5 cup cornstarch, 0.5 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp salt, and 0.5 tsp black pepper. Whisk together to blend the dry coating.

Step 3

In a small bowl, beat 2 large eggs. Set aside.

Step 4

Dip each piece of chicken into the egg mixture, then coat it in the cornstarch-flour mixture. Set the coated chicken pieces on a plate.

Step 5

In a large skillet or wok, heat 0.5 cup vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, fry the coated chicken in batches until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per batch. Remove the chicken and drain on paper towels. Set aside.

Step 6

In a medium saucepan, combine 0.5 cup fresh orange juice, the zest of 1 orange, 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 3 tbsp soy sauce, 3 tbsp honey, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 tsp grated ginger, 1 tsp sesame oil, and 0.25 tsp red chili flakes.

Step 7

Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to combine the ingredients and allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 8

In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp cornstarch with 0.25 cup water to make a slurry. Slowly add the slurry to the simmering sauce, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens. Remove it from heat once it reaches your desired consistency.

Step 9

In the same skillet or wok (after carefully discarding excess oil), return the fried chicken and pour the orange sesame sauce over the chicken. Toss the chicken to fully coat it in the sauce.

Step 10

Sprinkle the chicken with 1 tbsp sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish.

Step 11

Serve the Orange Sesame Chicken over steamed white rice or with a side of vegetables for a complete meal.
