Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.75 cups Whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Orange juice

Directions

Step 1

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt.

Step 2

In a separate small bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the milk, melted unsalted butter, and orange zest until well combined.

Step 3

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a thick, sticky dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 4

In a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the correct temperature.

Step 5

Using a small cookie scoop or two teaspoons, carefully drop small balls of dough (about 1 inch wide) into the hot oil. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pot.

Step 6

Fry the donut holes for 3-4 minutes, turning them occasionally with a slotted spoon, until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 7

Remove the cooked donut holes from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Repeat until all the dough is used.

Step 8

While the donut holes are cooling slightly, make the orange glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar and orange juice in a small bowl until smooth and slightly runny.

Step 9

Dip each donut hole into the orange glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the glazed donut holes on a wire rack to set for a few minutes.

Step 10

Serve the Chinese Orange Donut Holes warm or at room temperature and enjoy!
