Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Dry active yeast
  • 1.25 cups Warm water (110°F)
  • 0.25 cup Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 3 cups Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage or cooked ground beef (optional)
  • 20 pieces Sliced pepperoni (optional)
  • 1 28-ounce can Crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 3 cloves Minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 0.25 cup Grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, sugar, and salt.

Step 2

In a small bowl or measuring cup, dissolve the dry active yeast in warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

Step 3

Add the yeast mixture and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

Step 4

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Grease a large bowl with olive oil, place the dough inside, and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

While the dough rises, prepare the sauce. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

Step 7

Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 8

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and optional red pepper flakes. Simmer for 15–20 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 12-inch deep-dish pizza pan or a cast-iron skillet with olive oil.

Step 10

Punch down the dough and roll it out into a circle approximately 14 inches in diameter. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan, pressing it up the sides.

Step 11

Layer the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on the bottom of the crust.

Step 12

If using, add the cooked Italian sausage or ground beef and sliced pepperoni over the cheese layer.

Step 13

Spread the prepared tomato sauce over the top, ensuring it covers the toppings completely.

Step 14

Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the sauce for an extra burst of flavor.

Step 15

Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Step 16

Allow the pizza to cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.
