Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onion, finely chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 56 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 28 ounces diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups water or broth
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 whole bay leaves
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley or basil, chopped, for garnish

Directions

Step 1

Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add onions and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5–7 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook while breaking the meat apart with a spoon until browned and cooked through, about 8–10 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and water or broth.

Step 6

Add the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, dried parsley, salt, black pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and bay leaves. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 1.5 to 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to allow the flavors to develop.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaves before serving. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 9

Serve over cooked spaghetti or any pasta of your choice. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil for a burst of color and flavor.
