Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, diced yellow onion
  • 3 cloves, minced garlic
  • 2 small, finely chopped jalapeño peppers
  • 1 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional) fresh cilantro

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and sauté for about 5-6 minutes, or until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and chopped jalapeños. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning the garlic.

Step 4

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chipotle chili powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, and brown sugar to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and pour in the water. Simmer the mixture for approximately 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

Stir in the red pepper flakes, lime juice, and salt. Adjust seasoning to taste if needed.

Step 7

Remove the pan from heat and let the sauce cool slightly.

Step 8

Optionally, blend the sauce using an immersion blender or a regular blender for a smooth consistency, or leave it chunky if preferred.

Step 9

Finish by stirring in the chopped cilantro if using.

Step 10

Serve warm as a dip, drizzle over your favorite Mexican dishes, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
