Ingredients

  • 6 medium (peeled, cored, and chopped) apples
  • 1.5 cups frozen or fresh pitted cherries
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks. If using fresh cherries, pit them and set aside.

Step 2

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the apples, cherries, and water. Stir to evenly distribute the ingredients.

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cover the pan and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples and cherries have softened and broken down.

Step 4

Use a potato masher or an immersion blender to mash or puree the mixture to your desired consistency. For a smoother applesauce, use the blender; for a chunkier texture, mash by hand.

Step 5

Stir in the lemon juice. If desired, add sugar and/or cinnamon to taste. Mix well to combine.

Step 6

Allow the Cherry Applesauce to cool slightly, then transfer it to a bowl or airtight container.

Step 7

Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled as a snack, dessert, or side dish.
