Ingredients

  • 1 pound large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 large green bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 stalks celery (diced)
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 28 ounces canned diced tomatoes (undrained)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 pieces bay leaves
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups white rice (cooked, for serving)
  • 2 tablespoons parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and celery. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the canned diced tomatoes (with their juices), tomato paste, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, paprika, thyme, oregano, cayenne pepper (if using), bay leaves, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

Step 5

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you want a thicker sauce, continue to simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes.

Step 7

Add the shrimp to the sauce and stir gently to coat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaves from the skillet and discard.

Step 9

Serve the Shrimp Creole over white rice, garnished with chopped parsley.
