  • 400 grams crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 200 grams shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 50 grams grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
