Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef
  • 250 grams Ground pork
  • 100 grams Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 100 grams Mozzarella cheese, cubed
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon Red chili flakes
  • 400 grams Crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 10 Basil leaves, fresh (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons Parsley, fresh (chopped)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan cheese, 1 minced garlic clove, salt, black pepper, and parsley.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly until well combined but do not overmix to keep the meatballs tender.

Step 4

Take a small amount of the meat mixture and form it into a ball about 2 inches in diameter. Press a small cube of mozzarella cheese into the center, then reform the ball to cover the cheese completely.

Repeat with the remaining meat mixture and mozzarella cubes. You should have approximately 12-15 meatballs.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the meatballs in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Set aside on a plate.

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and reduce the heat to medium. Sauté the remaining minced garlic and red chili flakes for 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes.

Gently transfer the seared meatballs into the tomato sauce. Spoon some sauce over the meatballs to coat them.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Sprinkle freshly chopped basil over the cooked meatballs and stir gently.
