Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 8 slices Ham slices
  • 8 slices Cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 1 serving Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame seeds (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, warm the milk and butter over low heat until the butter melts. Allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm.

Step 3

Add the lukewarm milk-butter mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.

Step 4

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.

Step 5

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a circle.

Step 7

Place 1 slice of ham and 1 slice of cheese in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch tightly to seal, forming a bun.

Place the buns seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them apart. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the buns with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top, if desired.

Bake in the preheated oven for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
