Ingredients

  • 6 cups day-old bread (such as French bread or sourdough)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2

Cut the day-old bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, melted butter, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper until fully combined.

Step 4

Pour the egg and milk mixture over the bread cubes. Toss gently to coat all pieces and allow the bread to soak for 10 minutes.

Step 5

Fold in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese into the soaked bread mixture.

Step 6

Transfer the soaked bread mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy your cheesy, savory bread pudding!
