Ingredients

  • 250 g Self-raising flour
  • 50 g Unsalted butter
  • 150 ml Milk
  • 150 g Shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 100 g Sliced ham
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 large Egg (beaten, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour and salt.

Step 3

Add the unsalted butter to the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Step 4

Gradually pour in the milk, mixing as you go, to form a soft dough. Add more milk if the dough seems too dry.

Step 5

On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently for 1-2 minutes, then roll it out into a rectangle roughly 30cm by 20cm.

Step 6

Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the dough, leaving a 1cm border along one long edge.

Step 7

Lay the ham slices evenly across the top of the cheese.

Step 8

Starting from the long edge without the border, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the seam to seal it.

Step 9

Using a sharp knife, slice the log into approximately 12 even pieces.

Step 10

Place the pieces cut-side up on the prepared baking tray, spacing them slightly apart.

Step 11

Brush the tops of the scrolls with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Step 12

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.

Step 13

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving warm.
