Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp green onion, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

Step 2

Peel and dice the potatoes into evenly sized chunks. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes are cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dice the onion and mince the garlic. Add the onion to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.

Step 5

Stir the minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon of salt, 0.5 teaspoon black pepper, and paprika into the cooked beef. Let cook for another 1-2 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside.

Step 6

Once the potatoes are done cooking, drain them and return to the pot. Add the butter, milk, and the remaining 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency with additional milk if needed.

Step 7

Spread half of the mashed potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Layer the cooked ground beef mixture over the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef.

Step 8

Spread the remaining mashed potatoes over the cheese layer, smoothing the top with a spatula. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese over the top layer of mashed potatoes.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the cheese on top is melted and bubbly. If desired, broil for 2-3 minutes at the end to achieve a golden-brown crust.

Step 10

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onion if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
