Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1.5 teaspoons Cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee (clarified butter) or oil
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 whole Bay leaf
  • 2 whole Cloves
  • 1 small piece Cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole Green chili (optional, slit)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water 2-3 times until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Soak the rice in water for 20 minutes, then drain and set aside.

Step 2

Heat ghee or oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the cumin seeds to the hot ghee/oil and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds until they release their aroma.

Step 4

Add the bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon stick, and sauté for another 30 seconds.

Step 5

If using, add the slit green chili and sauté briefly.

Step 6

Add the drained basmati rice to the pot and stir gently for 1-2 minutes to coat the rice with the spices and ghee/oil.

Step 7

Pour in the 2 cups of water, add salt, and give it a gentle stir.

Step 8

Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let the rice cook for 12-15 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

Step 9

Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the steam to evenly finish cooking the rice.

Step 10

Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains.

Step 11

Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired, and serve warm with curry, dal, or as a standalone dish.
