Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold)
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional, for brushing tops)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Cut the cold unsalted butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Some small pea-sized pieces of butter should still remain for flakiness.

Step 4

Pour the buttermilk into the bowl and gently stir it in with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix to keep the biscuits tender.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat or roll the dough out to about 1/2-inch thickness.

Step 6

Using a round biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass (about 2.5 inches in diameter), cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a small gap between each biscuit.

Step 7

Gently re-roll the scraps of dough and cut out additional biscuits until all the dough is used.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

Step 9

If desired, brush the tops of the hot biscuits with melted butter for extra flavor.

Step 10

Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as butter, honey, or jam.
