Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 4 pieces black tea bags
  • 2 pieces cinnamon sticks
  • 6 pieces whole cloves
  • 2 pieces star anise
  • 8 pieces cardamom pods
  • 10 pieces whole black peppercorns
  • 1 inch (sliced) fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 4 cups of water with the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, cardamom pods, black peppercorns, and sliced ginger.

Step 2

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 10 minutes to allow the spices to release their flavors.

Step 3

Add the black tea bags to the saucepan and let them steep in the hot liquid for 5 minutes. Cover the pan to trap the heat.

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat and discard the tea bags and spices by straining the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof bowl or pitcher.

Step 5

Stir in the vanilla extract, honey, and granulated sugar until fully dissolved.

Step 6

Let the chai concentrate cool to room temperature, then transfer it to a clean, airtight container or bottle. Store it in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Step 7

To serve, mix equal parts of chai concentrate and your choice of milk (dairy or non-dairy). Heat the mixture for a hot chai latte or pour it over ice for a refreshing iced chai.
