Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • 28 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 15 ounces canned kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 15 ounces canned black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 0.25 cup black olives, sliced (for spider eyes)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for bread glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon flour

Directions

Step 1

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 2

Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 3

Add ground beef or turkey to the pot. Brown the meat, breaking it apart with a spoon, until fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.

Step 4

Stir in canned diced tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, brown sugar, and broth.

Step 5

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let the chili simmer uncovered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

While the chili simmers, prepare the spider breads. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 7

Sprinkle a clean surface with 1 tablespoon of flour. Roll out the crescent roll dough and cut it into 8 even rectangles.

Step 8

Shape each dough rectangle into a spider body—one larger central piece for the body and 8 small thin strips for legs. Attach the legs to the body by pinching the dough together.

Step 9

Place the spider dough shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush them with a beaten egg for a shiny glaze.

Step 10

Add black olive slices to the spider bodies to create eyes.

Step 11

Bake the spider breads for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 12

Serve the chili in bowls or a 'cauldron' serving pot. Place the spider breads on the side or let them crawl on top of the chili for a spooky presentation!
