Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 0.5 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 0.75 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tbsp butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 2

Remove any excess grease from the skillet, leaving about 1 tablespoon behind.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Lower the heat to medium and stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Step 5

Add the water and stir everything together until the sauce is smooth and evenly distributed.

Step 6

Let the mixture simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat.

Step 7

While the meat mixture is simmering, you can toast the hamburger buns if desired. Heat a separate skillet over medium heat, spread the cut sides of the buns with butter, and toast them until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 8

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottoms of the toasted buns, top with the remaining bun halves, and serve warm.
