Ingredients

  • 150 grams Unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 200 grams Semisweet chocolate chips or chopped semisweet chocolate
  • 150 grams Granulated sugar
  • 4 pieces Large eggs
  • 30 grams Unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 15 grams Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)
  • 100 grams Fresh berries (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, melt the butter and chocolate together. Stir occasionally until smooth, then remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 3

In a separate large bowl, whisk together the sugar and eggs until the mixture is frothy and light. This will help create a tender cake texture.

Step 4

Slowly pour the melted chocolate mixture into the sugar-egg mixture, whisking constantly to combine thoroughly.

Step 5

Sift the cocoa powder into the bowl, and add the vanilla extract and salt. Gently fold the mixture together until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Tap the pan gently on the countertop to remove any air bubbles.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until the center is just set. The cake should have a thin crust on top and jiggle slightly in the middle.

Step 8

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges, then carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate.

Step 9

Dust the top with powdered sugar, and garnish with fresh berries if desired. Slice and serve either warm with a scoop of ice cream or at room temperature.
