In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving a few chunks for texture.
Add the breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, scotch bonnet or chili pepper, chopped cilantro, lime zest and juice, ground allspice, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix well until fully combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty about 1 inch thick.
Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the neutral cooking oil.
Once the oil is hot, cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through. Be gentle when flipping to avoid breaking the patties.
