Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) Canned black beans (rinsed and drained)
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion (finely diced)
  • 1 tablespoon Dark brown sugar
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Soy sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons Water

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Once the oil is warm, add the diced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-12 minutes until the onion is soft and starts to caramelize.

Step 3

Add the brown sugar and stir to incorporate. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the onions deepen in color and become sticky.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to prevent burning.

Step 5

Add the rinsed and drained black beans to the skillet, along with the soy sauce, ground cumin, and salt. Stir well to coat the beans in the onion and garlic mixture.

Step 6

Cook for 2-3 minutes until the beans are heated through.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and add the butter to the skillet. Stir until the butter is fully melted and coats the beans.

Step 8

Add the lime juice and 2 tablespoons of water, stirring to create a creamy consistency. If the mixture is too thick, add an additional tablespoon of water until your desired texture is achieved.

Step 9

Remove the skillet from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Step 10

Transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 11

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat gently before serving if desired.
