Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup Pecans (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, and active dry yeast.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over low heat until warm (about 110°F or 43°C), then pour the mixture into the dry ingredients.

Step 3

Add the eggs to the bowl and mix until a sticky dough forms.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can knead the dough in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 6-8 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

Step 6

While the dough is rising, prepare the caramel by melting 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and heavy cream, stirring until smooth and slightly thickened (about 3-5 minutes). Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 7

Grease a baking dish (about 9x13 inches) and pour the caramel sauce evenly into the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle chopped pecans (if using) over the caramel.

Step 8

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle (about 12x18 inches).

Step 9

Spread a thin layer of softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with additional brown sugar if desired. Roll the dough tightly into a log, starting from the long edge.

Step 10

Cut the log into 12 equal slices and arrange them in the prepared baking dish on top of the caramel.

Step 11

Cover the dish with a towel and let the buns rise again for 30-40 minutes until puffed up.

Step 12

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the buns for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 13

Let the buns cool in the pan for 5-7 minutes, then carefully invert the pan onto a serving platter to release the caramel topping.

Step 14

Serve warm and enjoy the gooey, caramel goodness!
