Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
  • 0.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cups brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoons lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks.

Step 2

In a large slow cooker, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, and lemon juice. Stir to ensure the apples are evenly coated.

Step 3

Add the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.

Step 4

Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples will soften and begin to break down.

Step 5

After the apples are tender, puree the mixture using an immersion blender or transfer it to a blender in batches. Blend until smooth.

Step 6

Return the pureed mixture to the slow cooker and continue cooking uncovered on low heat for an additional 2-4 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens to the desired consistency.

Step 7

Towards the end of cooking, stir in the unsalted butter and vanilla extract. Mix well until fully incorporated.

Step 8

Turn off the slow cooker and let the caramel apple butter cool slightly.

Step 9

Transfer the apple butter to sterilized jars or airtight containers and refrigerate. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or frozen for longer storage.

Step 10

Serve on toast, pancakes, waffles, or as a topping for desserts!
