Ingredients

  • 3 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 large pears (Bosc or Bartlett recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 20 pieces soft caramels, unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt (for topping)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples and pears. Add the lemon juice, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Toss until the fruit is evenly coated, then spread the mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.

Step 3

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the unwrapped caramels with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream, stirring frequently, until smooth. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apple and pear mixture in the dish.

Step 4

In another bowl, prepare the topping by combining the rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, melted butter, vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix until the topping forms a coarse, crumbly texture.

Step 5

Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the fruit and caramel layer.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the fruit is tender and bubbling and the topping is golden brown.

Step 7

Remove from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
