Ingredients

  • 2 cups Ketchup
  • 0.5 cups Apple cider vinegar
  • 0.5 cups Honey
  • 1.5 tablespoons Hickory liquid smoke
  • 0.5 cups Dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoons Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoons Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoons Ground mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoons Cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.25 cups Water

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, honey, and water. Stir well to combine.

Step 2

Add the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using) to the saucepan. Mix until all spices are fully incorporated.

Step 3

Add the hickory liquid smoke to the saucepan and stir thoroughly to distribute its smoky flavor evenly throughout the sauce.

Step 4

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching.

Step 5

Once the sauce begins to simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Step 6

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. If you want a spicier kick, add a pinch more cayenne pepper or black pepper.

Step 7

Once the sauce reaches your desired thickness, remove it from heat and let it cool to room temperature.

Step 8

Transfer the sauce into a sterilized jar or airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Step 9

Use this sauce to glaze grilled meats, as a dipping sauce, or as a flavor enhancer for your favorite BBQ dishes!
