Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 medium potatoes
  • 2 large carrots
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 large sheets aluminum foil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat grill or campfire to medium heat (approximately 375°F).

Step 2

Wash and peel the potatoes and carrots. Slice them into thin, even pieces for uniform cooking.

Step 3

Peel and thinly slice the onion.

Step 4

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until the seasoning is evenly distributed.

Step 5

Tear 4 large sheets of aluminum foil (approximately 12x16 inches each). Lay each sheet flat on a clean surface.

Step 6

Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil in the center of each sheet of foil.

Step 7

Divide the potatoes, carrots, and onions evenly among the foil sheets, placing them on top of the olive oil.

Step 8

Portion the seasoned ground beef into four equal patties. Place one patty on top of each pile of vegetables.

Step 9

Add 1 tablespoon of butter to each packet, placing it on top of the ground beef patty.

Step 10

Carefully fold the sides of the foil up and over the food, sealing the edges tightly to form a packet. Ensure there are no gaps to prevent steam from escaping.

Step 11

Place the foil packets on the preheated grill or directly on the campfire grate. Cook for about 25-30 minutes, flipping the packets halfway through.

Step 12

Carefully remove the packets from the heat. Using tongs or oven mitts, open each packet slowly to release the steam.

Step 13

Check the doneness of the vegetables and beef. If needed, reseal the foil and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Step 14

Serve the hobo dinners directly in the foil packets or transfer them to plates. Enjoy your hearty, no-mess meal!
