Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish and set aside.
In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, 0.75 cup of granulated sugar, and cornstarch. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat and pour the blueberry mixture into the prepared baking dish.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In another bowl, use a handheld or stand mixer to cream the butter and 0.5 cup of sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
