Ingredients

  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup raisins
  • 0.25 cup pecans (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and slice it into thin strips, discarding the core. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet or sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 3

Once the butter is melted and begins to foam, stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cook for 1 minute until the mixture becomes fragrant and well combined.

Step 4

Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet and toss well to coat it evenly with the butter-sugar mixture.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with a lid. Let the cabbage cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid sticking.

Step 6

After 20 minutes, remove the lid and increase the heat to medium. Add the raisins and optional pecans, stirring to combine.

Step 7

Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the cabbage to caramelize and the liquid to reduce. If desired, drizzle honey over the top and mix it in for extra sweetness.

Step 8

Taste and adjust seasoning, adding a pinch more salt or cinnamon if needed.

Step 9

Serve warm as a sweet side dish or as a unique dessert alternative. Enjoy!
