Ingredients

  • 1 head (medium, approximately 2 lbs) Green cabbage
  • 1 lb Ground chicken or pork
  • 2 cups Cooked white rice
  • 3 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1.5 tablespoons Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger (freshly grated)
  • 3 minced Garlic cloves
  • 3 chopped Green onions
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Rice vinegar
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon (optional, for garnish) Toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and set aside.

Step 2

Remove the outer tough leaves of the cabbage, then cut into quarters and remove the core. Finely shred the cabbage using a knife or food processor.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat. Add the ground chicken or pork and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, approximately 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and freshly grated ginger to the skillet with the meat. Stir-fry for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and rice vinegar. Cook for another 2 minutes to combine the flavors.

Step 6

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, shredded cabbage, cooked meat mixture, green onions, and breadcrumbs. Mix thoroughly.

Step 7

In a separate small bowl, whisk the eggs, then pour them into the cabbage mixture. Add the salt and black pepper. Toss until everything is evenly combined.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture into the prepared casserole dish. Press it down gently with a spatula to create an even layer.

Step 9

Drizzle the remaining 0.5 tablespoon of sesame oil over the top of the casserole.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the casserole is golden-brown on top and the cabbage is tender.

Step 11

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Optionally, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for garnish.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy your flavorful Cabbage Casserole with an Oriental Flair!
