Ingredients

  • 8 pieces large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon butter or non-stick spray

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked. Transfer the sausage to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess grease.

Step 4

Using the same skillet, sauté the diced onion until softened and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Set aside.

Step 5

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

Step 6

Add the cubed bread, cooked sausage, sautéed onions, and 1.5 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese to the bowl. Gently fold the mixture until the bread is coated evenly with the egg mixture and the ingredients are distributed.

Step 7

Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 8

Sprinkle the remaining 0.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese evenly across the top of the casserole.

Step 9

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown and set in the center.

Step 11

Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Slice into portions and enjoy!
