Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1.5 cups Buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cups Warm water
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the buttermilk and butter until the butter is melted. Let the mixture cool slightly until warm to the touch but not hot.

Step 3

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine 3 1/2 cups of flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, buttermilk mixture, and egg. Mix at low speed until a dough starts to form.

Step 4

Gradually add the remaining 1/2 cup of flour, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is slightly sticky but manageable.

Step 5

Knead the dough in the stand mixer on medium speed for 5-7 minutes, or turn it out onto a floured surface and knead by hand for 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. For rolls, divide the dough into 10-12 equal pieces and shape each into a ball. For loaf bread, shape the dough into a log to fit a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.

Step 8

Place the rolls onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, or place the loaf-shaped dough into the prepared pan. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls or loaf with melted butter for a golden crust.

Step 10

Bake for 20-25 minutes for rolls, or 30-35 minutes for the loaf, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
