Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for greasing the baking dish)
  • 2 tablespoons parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with oil and set aside.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly and form into four equal-sized patties.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the beef patties for about 2-3 minutes on each side, just until browned. Remove from the skillet and arrange them in the prepared baking dish.

Step 4

Return the skillet to medium heat. Melt the butter and add the sliced mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly golden.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir well to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then slowly whisk in the milk. Continue to cook and stir until the sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and combined. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Step 7

Pour the mushroom sauce evenly over the beef patties in the baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs on top.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve warm.
