Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 whole bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking them apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until fully browned, about 7-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water until well combined.

Step 6

Add the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to incorporate.

Step 7

Toss in the bay leaves and bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and allow the sauce to gently simmer uncovered for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Add extra water if the sauce becomes too thick.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove the bay leaves before serving.

Step 10

Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta.
