Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Large onions
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 4 sprigs Fresh thyme
  • 0.25 cups Parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel the onions, ensuring you remove the outer papery layers but keep the root ends intact to help them hold their shape.

Step 3

Cut a small slice off the top of each onion to create a flat surface and carve out a shallow cavity in the center of each onion using a paring knife or teaspoon.

Step 4

Place the onions in a baking dish, ensuring they are spaced evenly apart.

Step 5

In each onion cavity, place 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter.

Step 6

Drizzle the onions with olive oil, making sure each onion gets an even coating.

Step 7

Sprinkle the onions with salt and black pepper. Lay one sprig of fresh thyme on top of each onion.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil to trap the steam. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and tender when pierced with a knife.

Step 10

If desired, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese during the last 5 minutes of baking to allow it to melt and brown slightly.

Step 11

Remove the onions from the oven, discard the thyme sprigs, and let them cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm as a side dish or a light main course.
