Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Peel the onions and slice off a small portion from the top and bottom of each to create flat surfaces. Use a paring knife or melon baller to carve out a small well in the top of each onion (about 1 inch wide).
Place the onions in a baking dish with sides high enough to support them standing upright. Drizzle the olive oil over the onions, ensuring they are lightly coated, then sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly on top.
Place 1 tablespoon of butter into the carved-out well of each onion. Scatter the fresh thyme leaves over and around the onions.
