Ingredients

  • 4 pieces (6 oz each) Tuna steaks
  • 0.25 cup Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Mirin (sweet rice wine)
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 teaspoon (grated) Fresh ginger
  • 1 clove (minced) Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Water
  • 2 stalks (chopped) Scallions
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the soy sauce, mirin, sesame oil, honey, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Stir well to incorporate.

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water until dissolved and smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the saucepan, whisking consistently to prevent lumps.

Step 3

Cook the sauce for about 3-4 minutes until it thickens slightly, then remove from heat. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

Step 4

Place the tuna steaks in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the cooled teriyaki sauce over the tuna, reserving the other half for later use. Seal the dish or bag and let the tuna marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours for a stronger flavor).

Step 5

Preheat your oven's broiler and position the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly grease it to prevent sticking.

Step 6

Remove the tuna steaks from the marinade, allowing the excess to drip off. Discard the marinade that the tuna was sitting in.

Step 7

Place the tuna steaks on the prepared baking sheet and broil them for 4-5 minutes per side, or until the center of the tuna is cooked to your desired doneness (medium-rare works best).

Step 8

While the tuna is broiling, reheat the reserved teriyaki sauce in the saucepan over low heat if needed.

Step 9

Once cooked, transfer the tuna steaks to a serving plate and drizzle the reheated teriyaki sauce generously over the top.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped scallions and toasted sesame seeds before serving. Serve warm with steamed rice or sautéed vegetables on the side.
