Ingredients

  • 6 slices Stale bread (white or wholegrain)
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 500 milliliters Whole milk
  • 50 grams Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 50 grams Raisins or sultanas (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2

Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of stale bread. Cut the buttered slices into triangles or small squares.

Step 3

Layer the bread pieces in the prepared baking dish, buttered side up. If using raisins or sultanas, sprinkle them between the layers of bread.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan, gently heat the milk (do not boil). Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and ground cinnamon.

Step 5

In a bowl, whisk the eggs until blended. Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the eggs, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.

Step 6

Pour the milk and egg custard mixture over the bread layers, ensuring all pieces are saturated. Let it sit for 10 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Step 7

Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan. Pour hot water into the roasting pan until it comes halfway up the sides of the baking dish, creating a water bath to prevent burning.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Step 9

Remove the dish from the water bath and let it cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or serve with cream or custard.
