Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 0.25 cup powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cup chocolate shavings

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper for easier release.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.

Step 4

Slowly add the boiling water to the batter, mixing on low speed until smooth. The batter will be thin; this is normal.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 6

Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7

Once the cakes are cool, use a serrated knife to level the tops, if needed.

Step 8

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread half of the caramel sauce evenly over the top. Place the second layer on top and spread the remaining caramel sauce over it.

Step 9

In a chilled mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream with the powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Use this whipped cream to frost the top and sides of the cake.

Step 10

Sprinkle the chocolate shavings decoratively over the top of the cake.

Step 11

Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld together.

Step 12

Slice and enjoy Brady's special treat with Dad!
