Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup pecans
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into large chunks. Place the chunks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 3

Drizzle the sweet potatoes with 1 tablespoon of melted butter, toss to coat, and roast in the oven for 25–30 minutes or until fork-tender.

Step 4

While the sweet potatoes are roasting, prepare the pecans by heating a small skillet over medium heat. Add the pecans and toast for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

Add the maple syrup to the skillet with the pecans and stir until the pecans are coated and the syrup thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Transfer the candied pecans to a parchment-lined plate and let them cool.

Step 6

Once the sweet potatoes are done roasting, transfer them to a large mixing bowl.

Step 7

Add the remaining butter, brown sugar, bourbon, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt to the bowl.

Step 8

Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, smash the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy. Adjust the seasoning with additional salt or cinnamon as desired.

Step 9

Serve the smashed sweet potatoes in a serving bowl and top with the candied pecans for added crunch and flavor.
