Ingredients

  • 6 sheets Phyllo dough
  • 500 ml Milk
  • 100 g Granulated sugar
  • 60 g Semolina
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 80 g Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until warm, but do not let it boil.

Step 3

Gradually whisk in the sugar and semolina, continuing to stir until the mixture thickens into a custard-like consistency (about 5-7 minutes).

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the custard to cool slightly.

Step 5

In a small bowl, beat the eggs and slowly incorporate them into the custard mixture, stirring constantly to avoid curdling.

Step 6

Melt the butter and use a pastry brush to butter your baking dish and the individual phyllo sheets.

Step 7

Layer three sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.

Step 8

Pour the custard evenly over the layered phyllo sheets.

Step 9

Cover the custard with the remaining three sheets of phyllo, again brushing butter between each layer and on the top sheet.

Step 10

Lightly score the top layer of phyllo into serving-sized squares to make it easier to cut after baking.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the phyllo is golden and crisp.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and allow the bougatsa to cool slightly.

Step 13

Before serving, dust the pastry generously with powdered sugar and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.

Step 14

Slice along the scored lines and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy your Lazy Woman's Custard Pastry!
