Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brewed coffee (hot)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line them with parchment paper circles.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes, or until smooth and fully combined.

Step 4

Carefully stir in the hot brewed coffee. The batter will be thin; this is normal.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

Frost and decorate as desired. Chocolate frosting, cream cheese frosting, or a dusting of powdered sugar work wonderfully with this cake.
