Ingredients

  • 4 pounds beef brisket
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix together the kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika to create a dry rub.

Step 3

Rub the spice mixture evenly over the brisket, making sure to coat all sides.

Step 4

Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Step 5

Sear the brisket on both sides until browned, about 4-5 minutes per side. Once seared, remove the brisket and set it aside on a plate.

Step 6

In the same pot, add the sliced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.

Step 7

Add the beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke (if using) to the pot. Stir to combine.

Step 8

Return the seared brisket to the pot, ensuring it is mostly submerged in the sauce. Spoon some sauce over the top of the brisket.

Step 9

Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid or foil and transfer it to the preheated oven. Cook for 4-5 hours, basting the brisket with the sauce every hour to ensure it stays moist.

Step 10

The brisket is done when it is fork-tender and easily pulls apart. Carefully remove the pot from the oven.

Step 11

Transfer the brisket to a cutting board and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain.

Step 12

Serve the brisket with the rich sauce from the pot drizzled over the top. Enjoy with your favorite sides like mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables!
