Ingredients

  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 0.5 cup fresh parmesan cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving 1 cup of pasta cooking water.

Step 2

While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently, until fragrant.

Step 5

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavors have melded. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 8

Toss the cooked spaghetti into the sauce, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if the sauce is too thick.

Step 9

Sprinkle with fresh parsley and grated parmesan cheese before serving.

Step 10

Serve immediately, and enjoy your Sunday night pasta with a side of garlic bread or a fresh green salad.
